Welina mai! Welcome to Linguistics 100!

This multimedia course will provide students with a first look at both historical and contemporary issues of language in Hawai‘i and the Pacific, acquainting them with the wealth of resources available on the Mānoa campus, on O‘ahu, and beyond. We will cover issues of the historical development and relationships among Pacific languages, looking at the structure of languages of Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia and Papua, issues of language as culture, variation and change, pidgins and creoles, language maintenance and revitalization, language contact, diaspora languages and identity, language documentation, and language endangerment.

Since Linguistics 100 is WI and HAP focus, students will be expected to write frequently and to think critically about material presented in class. Weekly writing assignments will be based on assigned texts and will ask students to engage in the linguistically rich environment of Hawai‘i.

This blog will be the central organizational hub of our class and a space for us to begin our discussions, continue dialogues and to connect to other communities of scholars.
